Frequently Asked Questions
HIV stands for Human Immunodeficiency Virus. This virus attacks the immune system, which normally defends the body against disease. Without treatment, the immune system weakens, leading to serious illnesses. The most severe stage is AIDS.
HIV spreads through direct contact with blood or body fluids from an infected person. Main transmission routes include unprotected sex and sharing needles for drug injection. HIV cannot spread through handshakes, hugging, kissing, coughs, sneezes, or contact with insects.
Harm reduction is an evidence-based, client-centered approach that aims to reduce harmful consequences associated with certain behaviours. APSS uses harm reduction by meeting people where they are, offering non-judgmental access to peer support, medical services, and social resources.
APSS offers free and confidential HIV testing. Our nurse is available on Tuesdays from 1:00–4:00 pm for HIV, Hepatitis A/B/C, STI, and pregnancy testing. No appointment needed. Contact us at (306) 924-8420 for more information.
The Queen City Needle Exchange provides sterile needles and a safe disposal location for used needles. We also offer harm reduction counselling, safer drug use education, and referrals to treatment services. Visit us during business hours or contact the Street Project Van after hours at (306) 766-7799.
There are many ways to support APSS: donate online or by cheque, volunteer at our Needle Exchange or packing parties, assist at education events, or host your own fundraiser. Contact us at (306) 924-8420 or visit our Get Involved page for more details.
Naloxone (Narcan) is a temporary opioid overdose antidote that reverses effects within 5–10 minutes. It is non-narcotic, non-addictive, and harmless if opioids are absent. Free naloxone kits and 15-minute training are available at our office at 1325 Albert Street, Tuesday–Sunday. No appointment needed.
